Defining the degree of degradation in plastics: Quantification of accumulated degradation products and leached stabilizers for predicting end-of-life

Plastics degrade through various mechanisms, complicating the definition of degradation degree. As degradation beyond a threshold triggers sudden property declines, a chemical metric is essential for predicting plastics' end-of-life. We propose quantifying degradation as the weight ratio of “completely degraded polymer” to pristine polymer, determined via AI-assisted pyrolysis mass spectrometry. This method offers deeper insights into degradation mechanisms and aids in predicting sudden material failures.
