Introduction

Rational design of chloride-ion conduction pathways using an open borate framework

image
Chloride ion solid electrolytes have recently attracted much attention due to the abundant resources of the chlorine element as well as the promise of all-solid-state batteries with high energy density. However, conventional chloride ion conductors are limited to simple chlorides, and material diversity is needed to further improve chemical and thermal stability and ionic conductivity. In this study, we focused on borate systems with an open framework structure, in which multiple anions of oxide and chloride ions are incorporated and chloride ions are expected to diffuse and migrate selectively, and developed a rational design approach for chloride ion conductors. Fig. (a) shows the crystal structures of (La-doped) Ca2B5O9Cl. As showin in Fig. (b), this study has been highlighted on a Front Cover.
