Phase-field modeling of the formation mechanism of microstructures in FePt-C nanogranular films during sputter deposition

      Keywords

Phase-field method, FePt-C nanogranular films, Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), Elastic-strain energy

      Overview

The rapid growth in data volumes driven by advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology has made the increasing power consumption of data centers a serious challenge. The key to improving the power efficiency per unit storage capacity of hard disk drives (HDDs) lies in the L10-FePt nanogranular films used in heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) media. In this study, the formation process of the microstructures that develop in FePt-C nanogranular films during sputter deposition on MgO substrates was simulated using the phase-field method. Through comparison and validation against experimental results, the roles of the elastic-strain energy, the C segregant, and the influence of the sputtering rate that govern the formation of uniform, well-isolated island-like structures were clarified.

      Novelty and originality

      • Developed a phase-field model of FePt-C nanogranular films that explicitly treats the continuous supply of atoms during sputter deposition
      • Elucidated the mechanism by which the relaxation of the elastic-strain energy forms the island-like structures essential for use in HDDs
      • Identified the mechanism by which the presence of the C segregant changes the diffusion paths and diffusion distances of atoms, promoting the vertical growth of FePt grains
      • Quantitatively clarified that the relative balance between the sputtering rate and the diffusion rate determines the final microstructure

The upper figure shows an overview of the microstructure formation simulation of FePt-C nanogranular films using the phase-field model developed in this study. The upper left shows the TEM image of an experimentally fabricated FePt-C film, which was used as a reference for determining the parameters used in the simulation. The upper right shows the three-dimensional simulation results (red: L10-FePt, blue: C, green: MgO), in which isolated island-like structures equivalent to those observed experimentally are reproduced. The lower row shows the stress field distribution (σ11; blue: compressive, red: tensile) on the film cross section (the (010) plane).

Owing to the lattice mismatch between FePt and MgO, a large tensile stress exceeding 10 GPa arises within the FePt grains. Because FePt grains prioritize the release of this strain energy, they tend to grow preferentially in the vertical direction. In addition, because tensile stress also develops on the MgO surface away from the FePt grains, the formation of new FePt/MgO interfaces is elastically unfavorable, and the coalescence of adjacent grains is suppressed. It was revealed that the combination of these two effects leads to the formation of uniform, well-isolated island-like structures. Furthermore, when the C segregant is added, the Fe and Pt atoms supplied by sputtering are captured on the C surface, shortening the diffusion distance to the top of the FePt grains, which further promotes vertical growth and facilitates the refinement of the FePt grains. From these findings, the following practical design guidelines for FePt-C films for high-recording-density HDDs were derived: (1) select a substrate that enables epitaxial growth while maintaining a sufficient lattice mismatch, (2) select a segregant material that does not exhibit interfacial coherence with FePt and the substrate, and (3) perform deposition at the highest sputtering rate that does not induce grain coalescence.

      Summary

A phase-field model that explicitly treats the supply of atoms during the sputter deposition process was constructed, and the microstructure formation in FePt-C nanogranular films was reproduced in qualitative and quantitative agreement with the experimental results. It was clarified that three factors—the elastic-strain energy, the effect of the C segregant in modifying the diffusion paths, and the sputtering rate—are the key factors determining the formation of island-like structures. These results provide clear guidelines for the material selection and deposition-process design of FePt magnetic recording films toward the realization of high-recording-density, high-power-efficiency HDDs.
