Advancing Additive Manufacturing of Heat‑Resistant Superalloys
Additive Manufacturing (AM) is emerging as a new fabrication technology that enables the direct production of components from 3D data, and it is increasingly being adopted in fields such as aerospace and medical engineering. However, among the many structural materials used today, only a limited number have been successfully applied to AM. In particular, for heat‑resistant superalloys that must withstand extreme high‑temperature environments, challenges such as deformation and cracking during fabrication remain, and AM‑processed materials often exhibit inferior properties compared with conventional wrought or cast alloys.
My research focuses on expanding the applicability of AM to higher‑temperature alloys by developing fabrication processes that suppress cracking and property degradation. In addition, I aim to design new alloy systems that can achieve even higher performance when produced through AM.
We investigated how cracking in additively manufactured IN738LC superalloy components (produced by laser powder bed fusion) changes under different heat‑treatment conditions. Through this work, we succeeded in suppressing cracking by optimizing both the fabrication parameters and the post‑build heat‑treatment conditions.
