Materials Design of Novel Quantum Materials and Their Physical Properties under Low Temperature and High Magnetic Field
Quantum Materials, Crystal Growth, Physical Properties, Low Temperature, High Magnetic Field
Overview
Quantum materials have recently emerged as one of the promising platforms for next-generation applications, with novel functional properties driven by contemporary concepts. Growing high-quality single crystals and extracting their intrinsic properties with various experimental techniques is the vital first step in this research field. In our project, we grow large and high-quality single crystals using the floating zone method. We then characterize the grown crystals by transport, magnetic, and thermodynamic measurements under low temperatures and high magnetic fields
to unveil the fundamental bulk properties of these quantum materials.
Novelty and originality
● Intrinsic properties of quantum materials
● SIngle-crystal growth by floating-zone method
● Physical properties under low temperature and high magnetic field
Details

(Upper-left) NdAlGe crystal grown by the floating-zone method. Here, the 5 lasers were used as the heating source to stabilize the molten zone. (Upper-right) Hall resistivity and specific heat of the grown crystal NdAlGe. We observed a clear anomalous Hall effect below the magnetically ordered temperature. (Lower-left) Improved halogen lamps for optical-type floating-zone furnace. A narrower molten zone was formed by a newly designed single-layered filament instead of conventional double-layered filaments. (Lower right) Field-temperature phase diagram of a bilayered ruthenate Ca3Ru2O7 grown by the floating-zone method using the improved halogen lamps. We observed a novel magnetic phase thermodynamically stabilized orginating from inversion symmetry breaking.
