Manipulating Pico- to Nanoliter Droplets on Surfaces without Sticking

Introduction to new articles
Liquid-repellent surfaces prevent droplets from sticking and have therefore been used as platforms for droplet manipulation. However, conventional technologies could only repel microliter-scale droplets, and preventing the adhesion of smaller droplets has remained a challenge. Here, we discovered that picoliter- to nanoliter-sized droplets do not adhere to the substrate when their surfaces are coated with super-omniphobic fumed titania nanoparticles. Using this technique, we developed diverse methods for manipulating a wide range of ultraminiature droplets. This research contributes to the further downscaling of fluidic devices.
