Systematic Elucidation of Pressure-Temperature Effects and Structural Anisotropy in Rare-Earth Borides RB4 Forming Shastry-Sutherland Lattices (SSL)

Precise determinations of the bulk modulus and thermal expansion coefficient were performed for the rare earth boride RB₄ with Shastry-Sutherland Lattices (SSL) using synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments. The a-axis direction, characteristic of SSLs, is less compressible than the c-axis. Despite the increase in f-electrons, it exhibited nearly the same bulk modulus. This value lies between those of RB12 and RB6 and correlates with the R-B distance, independent of boron concentration in the crystal structure. Structural anisotropy is more pronounced at low temperatures than under high pressure, suggesting it results from magnetic interactions within the SSL lattice.
