Spin state of a single molecule controlled by formation and dissociation of Si-O bonds using a STM tip

Radical molecules have attracted attention because their electronic and
spin states can be controlled by their structures and heteroatom
substitutions. In this study, we investigated the control of electronic
and spin states of 4,8,12-trioxotriangulene molecules adsorbed on an
AuSix thin film formed on a gold (111) surface, using low-temperature
scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT)
calculations. STM measurements revealed that various states of the
molecule depending on the adsorption sites and their interactions with
the substrate. Furthermore, using the STM tip to induce the formation
and dissociation of Si–O bonds within single molecules, we successfully
controlled the spin states and electronic properties of the molecules.
This study has provided new insights that contribute to the development
of molecular spintronics.
