Precision Assembly and Imaging of Metal Nanoclusters Achieved: A New Step Toward Tailored Hierarchical Nanomaterials

Precise assembly of metal nanoclusters and visualization of their structures at high resolution have been achieved. Various assemblies of IrAu₁₂ nanoclusters—dimers, linear trimers and oligomers, and triangular trimers— were synthesized by reacting pre-programmed Ir–Au nanoclusters with multidentate bridging ligands. A new sample preparation method using polystyrene as a matrix enabled direct visualization of the nanocluster assemblies using scanning transmission electron microscopy.
