      Title

Transverse thermoelectric phenomena in magnetic materials and their applications to heat-flux sensing

      Keywords

transverse thermoelectric generation, anomalous Nernst effect, heat-flux sensor, spin caloritronics

      Overview

A substantial amount of energy consumed in industrial processes, transportation, and electronic devices is dissipated as waste heat. Harvesting this otherwise unused thermal energy offers a promising route toward improving energy efficiency and developing sustainable energy technologies. Meanwhile, heat-flux sensing is increasingly important for thermal management, energy efficiency optimization, and the reliable operation of electronic and industrial systems. Thermoelectric generation, which enables the direct conversion of thermal energy into electricity, has been utilized for both waste-heat harvesting and heat-flux sensing. In particular, transverse thermoelectric phenomena offer new possibilities for developing compact, flexible, and scalable devices with simple structures.

      Novelty and originality

Development of new magnetic materials and structures for enhanced transverse thermoelectric properties. Fabrication and characterization of anomalous Nernst effect-based heat-flux sensors.

      Details

      image

Transverse thermoelectric generation produces an electric field (E) perpendicular to an applied temperature gradient (∇T), which offers the potential to create simple two-dimensional thermoelectric devices that overcome some of the challenges facing conventional Seebeck-effect-based devices. One of the well-known transverse thermoelectric phenomena is the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) observed in magnetic materials, which provides additional control of the thermoelectric output through the magnetization. The simple device structure is particularly attractive for creating novel heat-flux sensors, with potential advantages including improved durability and flexibility, lower thermal resistance, and reduced manufacturing cost. We prepare various magnetic thin films and investigate their thermoelectric properties. We also fabricate prototype ANE-based heat-flux sensors using these materials.

      Summary

Anomalous Nernst effect in magnetic materials is interesting for both fundamental condensed matter physics and new thermoelectric applications. Further advances in materials development and device engineering are expected to accelerate the practical implementation of transverse thermoelectric generation, particularly for high-performance heat-flux sensors.
