An air-electrode with hierarchically continuous pore architecture: a step toward “true” lithium–air batteries working with atmospheric oxygen

Introduction to new articles
Lithium-air batteries dramatically reduce battery weight and increase capacity. However, their power output is extremely poor, so that they can only operate in a pure oxygen environment. In reality, they are “oxygen”-batteries rather than “air”-batteries. Observation of the electrodes revealed that, in atmospheric oxygen condition, oxygen does not reach the entire electrode, stopping the discharge reaction. To address the issue, we developed a combined air-electrode that integrates the gas diffusion layer and the CNT electrode layer. As a result, oxygen from air can permeate the entire electrode, enabling large-capacity discharge and charge even under atmospheric air conditions.
