Atomic-Scale Observation of Moiré Potential in Twisted Hexagonal Boron Nitride Layers by Electron Microscopy

Twisted layers with moiré superlattices attract attention due to the control of electronic states by the twist angle. We fabricated atomically clean, twisted hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers using a chemical exfoliation technique. Inverse FFT images reflecting the moíre potential were obtained using TEM. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the overlap of atomic positions in each layer plays a key role in determining the periodicity and distribution of the potential.
