Title

Realization of solid-state batteries with high reliability

Keywords

Solid-state battery, solid electrolyte, ion conductor

Overview

High-performance rechargeable batteries, such as lithium-ion batteries, have contributed to the establishment of a sophisticated information society by serving as power sources for portable information terminals. Furthermore, rechargeable batteries are required to power electric vehicles and store renewable energy for its efficient use to achieve carbon neutrality, which is a recent challenge. This applications change comes to demand different performanceto rechargeable batteries. One of the battery systems that meets this requirements is solid-state batteries with ceramic electrolytes.

Novelty and originality

● High reliability owing to single-ion conducting properties
● High safety due to non-flammable electrolytes
● Battery development through ion transport phenomena in bulk and at interface

The most important feature for the batteries used in various measures aimed at achieving carbon neutrality is high reliability. Batteries used in electric vehicles and energy storage from renewables are large-scale, and thus safety issues originating from the flammable organic electrolytes used in lithium-ion batteries become serious. Furthermore, batteries in these applications are required to have durability incomparable to that of consumer applications. Because solid-state batteries do not use flammable electrolytes, battery safety is dramatically enhanced; moreover, since the diffusing species in the solid electrolyte is limited solely to lithium ions, any other species are not transported to the electrode surface to cause side reactions, resulting in a long battery life.
To realize solid-state batteries with these characteristics, not only solid electrolytes with highionic conductivity, but also processing technologies for bonding battery materials at interfaces that do not interfere ionic conduction, as well as the understanding and control of anomalous ionic conduction phenomena at the interfaces, are necessary. We are tackling these challenges together with computational and measurement researchers.

Summary

Solid-state batteries are anticipated not only for electric vehicles and power storage applications aimed at achieving carbon neutrality, but also as devices to store weak electric power generated by energy harvesting, which is expected to serve as self-sustained power sources for IoT. We will promote research toward realizing solid-state batteries meeting these diverse demands.
