Title

Electrochemistry of Molecules Aggregating on Microtextured Surfaces and Their Application to Sensors

Keywords

Molecules, Adsorption, Condensation, Dew Formation, Transpiration, Detection

Overview

I discovered that adsorbed water molecules and microscopically small water droplets can be detected by measuring the galvanic current generated when a conductive material comes into contact with an array of dissimilar-metal wires separated by submicron gaps. Based on this principle, we demonstrated the early detection of condensation at its initial stages and the measurement of minute amounts of water vapor released from humans and plants. We are also investigating the detection of molecules other than water, as well as their aggregation structures, phase transitions, and electrical conduction mechanisms.

Novelty and originality

● For the detection of microscopic and trace amounts of water, the sensor achieves sub-femtoliter resolution and a dynamic range exceeding four orders of magnitude—more than ten times greater than that of commercially available humidity sensors
● A fast response time of 0.05 seconds—more than 100 times faster than commercially available humidity sensors
● Use of widely established manufacturing technologies
● Flexibility in the choice of sensing materials
