Introduction

The first formation of ion tracks in diamond by MeV C60 fullerene ion irradiation

image
Injecting high-energy heavy ions between several tens and thousands MeV into solids can create cylindrical damage zones called ion tracks. Although these tracks form in many materials, none have ever been observed in diamond, even when irradiated with GeV uranium ions. Here we report the first observation of ion tracks in diamond under C60 fullerene ion irradiation between 2 and 9 MeV.
