Introduction

Enhanced Corrosion Resistance of AA6061 Aluminum Alloy via Electrodeposition of Mg-Al Layered Double Hydroxide Coatings

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) have gained attention as anti-corrosion coating materials due to their ability to absorb Cl- ions from corrosive environments through ion exchange with interlayer anions. AA6061 aluminum alloy has a microstructure with intermetallic precipitates (IMPs), which are known to act as initiation sites for corrosion. In this study, we demonstrated that corrosion can be suppressed by selectively depositing NO3--type Mg-Al-LDH as islands on the IMPs through electrodeposition in a Mg(NO3)2-Al(NO3)3 electrolyte solution. We also identified the optimal electrolyte concentration for inhibiting corrosion. Furthermore, we showed that ion exchange occurs between the NO3- ions in the deposited LDH and Cl- ions.
