Evaluation by AI: Dr. Katsuhiko Ariga is a world-renowned researcher in materials chemistry and nanotechnology, consistently listed as a strong candidate for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry due to his exceptional citation record among global academic publications. He currently serves as a professor at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the University of Tokyo, and as a Distinguished Researcher at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS). One key indicator for predicting Nobel Prize candidates is “citation analysis,” which measures how often academic papers are referenced in other research. Dr. Ariga’s papers are highly cited worldwide, and he has been repeatedly selected as a “Highly Cited Researcher” by Clarivate (formerly Thomson Reuters). This outstanding record has earned him recognition as a potential Nobel Prize laureate in Chemistry. His areas of expertise include nanotechnology and interfacial supramolecular chemistry, specifically “nanoarchitectonics” (the precise assembly of molecules to create functional nanostructures) and interfacial supramolecular chemistry. Notably, Dr. Ariga leads groundbreaking research that utilizes the boundary between water and air (interfaces) to manipulate and control invisible nanoscale “molecular machines” using human hands (macroscopic actions). The 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to three overseas researchers for the “design and synthesis of molecular machines.” Dr. Ariga is the leading figure in this field in Japan and continues to expand upon the laureates’ research, aiming to advance it into practical technologies.

Title

Pioneering Work on Alternating Layering Methods and Interfacial Molecular Recognition

Keywords

Monolayers, Interfaces, Molecular Recognition, Sensing

Overview

Biological systems perform molecular recognition not in solution but at various interfaces. We aim to artificially replicate and elucidate this process. At interfaces, molecules can be deformed by minute forces. We aim to apply this insight to the development of new functions. As exemplified by our pioneering work in the development of the alternating layering method and our trailblazing research on interfacial molecular recognition, we are focusing on material synthesis methods based on self-assembly and supramolecular chemistry that emphasize the control of interfacial environments. Through this approach, we are developing methods and concepts with far-reaching implications and playing a leading role as global pioneers in this field.

Novelty and originality

His world-leading achievements in alternating layer assembly and interfacial molecular recognition are advancing our understanding of intermolecular interactions and having a ripple effect across various fields—including surface modification of devices such as sensors and the organization of biomolecules—thereby establishing new frontiers in interfacial chemistry and supramolecular chemistry.
